Over 20 civil servants, 65 companies probed

More than 20 officials at the Revenue Department and private companies are under scrutiny for alleged offences related to the recent value-added tax (VAT) refund scam.

Officials ranked C-9 and lower face a disciplinary probe, while those of a higher rank are under fact-finding investigation as to whether they were involved in the VAT scandal that cost the state 4.3 billion baht in lost revenue, said Prasit Suebchana, the Finance Ministry inspector-general.

A ministry inquiry committee chaired by Mr Prasit has uncovered 18 ministerial officials suspected of fraudulent tax refunds.

The recent transfer of the former director-general of the Revenue Department, Satit Rungkasiri, to an inspector-general position may also be linked to the scam. The committee launched a probe of 65 companies suspected of involvement in illcit VAT refunds, finding that 40 were in the same network.

Mr Prasit said the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has filed criminal complaints aginst the 18 officials with the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

The DSI has aleready pursued criminal action aginst five suspects in the private sector.

However, The Anti-Money Laundering Office failed to retrieve the fraudulently obtined money. which was withdraw from bank accounts.

Mr Prasit said the committee has found that companies with normal business operations, in addition to the alleged 65, have asked for irregular VAT refunds.

Meanwhile, Revenue Department director-general Sutthichai Sangkamanee said the department has filed complaints against its 14 offcials and they have 60 days to consider a plea.

By law, government offcials at C-8 level or lower are investigated by the department, while those ranked C-9 and up are investigated by the ministry.
